Fix This? -DF

If you touch that system you will be married to it forever. I say "take off and nuke the entire site from orbit". Alright don't do that but run away.

James looked at this one today. The GC called us to see if we could finish this job. After looking at it, I'm not sure we can help. The homeowner ordered the material online and a neighbor installed the tubing. I use the term "installed" loosely. The 7/8" non-barrier tubing is installed 16" oc with paper thin plates sparsely stapled to the subfloor. A Takagi heater was specified to provide DHW and supply the radiant system in an "open-direct" system. I think I will have to pass on this one. -DF

    I think

Alcohol must have been a factor in there somewhere. There are three possibilties that I can think of.

1: He was under the influence when he ordered the stuff from the internet company

2: He was snockered when he conceived the whole idea in the first place

3: He was to hung over to do the work himself so he had his neighbor/buddy, who was himself blitzed, put the plates up.

I'd estimate heat output per sq ft to be......... Ohhhh...................maybe 3.

This is a perfect example of a DIYer who believed "it's so simple", failed to research and then did an extremely sloppy job with ZERO understanding of energy transfer.

Rip out and do it right or say "no".

    Opportunities lost...

Just think of all the opportunies you have missed here. The opportunity to get up close and personal with two members of the local bar - plantiffs counsel and defendants council - and just maybe if things go really well the local prosecuting attorney and a criminal defense attorney. Then there are the endless days in court for no pay which could lead to meeting the local sheriff when they sell your house, to say nothing of getting to meet the foreclosure department of the local financial institution that now owns your house. I've heard that banks have lots of pretty women working there which may come in handy after you get to meet two local divorce attorneys after the house is gone. Then there are the other members of the local bar that specialize in bankruptcy law - you may get to meet several of them, possibly one for every supplier you used to have. Then there's the folks down at the local u-move-it rental company assuming that you have anything left to move (remember it's hard to lose the tools of your trade in a bankruptcy case). Then there's the local Dewey, Cheatum & Howe used van dealer you will need to see to get a new van in the new town you have moved to. Then there are all the new customers you will need to meet, assuming you have managed to keep your license through all of this. And the list goes on and on. And you thought nothing positive could come of this job - you've just got to look at the bright side of things.

    235,000btu's input.

Do you think the internet co' was hedging it's bets a little ?

Run, run, run away...sounds like a Carl Denver song :O)

They've spent so much already, they can't afford you now. Sad.

The good news is, they can still use the Mobius to endlessly fill the 1,000 gal Jacuzzi they were planning on.

    They pretty much

    all look like that.

There is a system like that less than 5 miles from where I am sitting. Polaris water heater, open system, 7/8" tube etc.....

In this case, the installer found it too hard to get the 7/8" tube up to the floor, so he cradled it in the "heat transmission material". It currently hangs 6 to 8 inches from the floor.

Gave the HO a price to fix it, NO GO. In fact, he went back to the net to try and buy the materials for me to use to "fix" the job. The net company wanted to sell him exactly what he already had. Seems he has grown used to a 52 degree house. I passed on it.

  • Licenses???

We don't need no stinkin' licenses, and we CERTAINLY don't need no stinkin' licensed contractors rippin' us off!

Thank you Dan. These pictures will be shown in class as how NOT to do radiant floor heating. I may even include them in my HOMoaners FAQ guide about DIY hydronics...

You're a wise man to walk from this one.

Almost as crazy here Brian. Swear I see the Bradford pear and willow buds swelling and there's no way our one, short early cold snap was enough to affect the mosquitoes in any real way. Haven't driven to see the winter wheat crop, but something tells me it will be early.

Mobius. Interesting name for a WATER HEATER--sounds "endless" like the "Mobius strip".

    Ashamed

I had a run in with the comapny that sells this garbage. I told the salesman that he should be ashamed of himself for taking advantage of a homeowner. When you bend this pipe back and forth it takes two up and two down and you have a whole in the pipe. Their coupling is a hose barb with 4 automotive clamps, they size the pump (a 3spd grundfos) by speed. They are the reason radiant gets a bad name. I for one wish a lawyer had his way...

    Do Over

It's never too late to do it right. Of course there is no Thermofin for 7/8" non-barrier tube. From the sound of things, I'm not sure that tube would reliably withstand the force of being snapped into the channel anyway. If the GC is unwilling to start from scratch, I agree you are wise to walk away.

    Watch it Paul,

He might have bought that stuff from our local RPA official. (They did say it was non-barrier didn't they?) Kevin
  • Be careful what you wish for...

At least one of the owners of one of the internet companies frequents this web site and is know to be a litiguous type of person. Be careful what you say unless you are willing to defend yourself in a liable/slander type of law suit.

    Proceed with caution...

I would love to borrow the term "HOMoaners"!
I start my homeshow circuit this weekend and will definitely show this photo. Kevin
  • Not mine to give....

I "borrowed" it from someone here on the Wall. Just tell them you found it on the floor of the Wall...

I'm certain whoever coined the phrase wouldn't mind you using it though. We're ALL HOmoaners when it comes right down to it...:-)

Just be careful who you show it to. Some people get highly offended by it's use..

  • Coulda been...

That guy had a keyboard vernacular like none I've ever seen, and it was REALLY hard to read through all those tears that kept flowing from my eyes whenever I read his posts.

Funny thing about that guy, he was EXTREMELY intelligent when it came to muliple phase power systems, especially some of the older stuff in Philly.

I see his tag floating around on different web sites her'n there. Still cracks me up thinking about his writn'/typin' skills...

I'm SURE he would forgive us for using one of his lines.

    Too honest

Crooks can make money in this industry; and they are everywhere. I looked at one of these jobs (and ran away after donating way too much time) and made suggestions to improve the performance. The "designing engineer" has carefully crafted the presentation to let the company off the hook in case of failed performance. They sell a crappola system to the unwary HOmaoner while stating in fine print that a complete system design is always recommended; but may cost several thousand dollars.
