Nest for the UK

Nest comes up quite a bit here and seems to be generally disliked for steam. They announced a new model today though that is specifically for the UK and I wonder if it would be any better. Supposedly, it's targeted for radiant heat instead of forced hot air, but I don't know if that means hot water or steam.

Does anyone know anything about UK heating systems? Are they mostly steam or mostly hot water? Why don't most UK systems have thermostats? The thermostat in my house is ancient, so it's not like the concept is new. It seems strange that there would be so little adoption of even dumb thermostats in the UK.

    No steam in the UK

The nest is a good-looking piece of wall jewelry which, now having been established here , can be exported to other countries, whether it really works or not.

There is still the problem with steam control.--NBC

    Hot Water

Most heating systems in the UK are hot water with radiators or electric storage. Each radiator typically has its own hydrostatic valve that controls heat to each room, usually without a thermostat. In older systems there are thermostats usually in the hallway near the stairs that can be turned down at bed-time.

I think Nest are going to have a struggle on their hands, especially that they cannot be installed by homeowners.

    I wonder if they know

that installing a programmable thermostat (no matter how smart) on a radiator system with TRVs will hardly make things better.

    Danfoss

Especially when Danfoss already has programmable digital TRVs out on the market there.
