Lost Wires

I just picked up a job where the owner did his own work. Unexpectedly, halfway through the project, he died.  There is one zone that is wired to the zone valve controller, but the wires do not appear in the room.  I'm guessing they somehow got buried behind the sheetrock.  Is there an instrument that can be connected to the wires in the boiler room that will send a signal through the wires that can then be picked up with a receiver at the other end?

    This?

Maybe call fluke & see if this is intended for that task.

    Fox & Hound

Is the common name for these.  The majority are made by Progressive Electronics (now owned by Textron/Greenlee.)  They are good enough to find the wires in most walls. Works best if you ground one end and hook the hot to all wires in the jacket in parallel.

I have a Gardner-Bender Instruments "Wire Tracker". It is probably 20 yrs old. The phone company guys use something similar. It is also called a tone generator.

Mine looks nothing like this one , but it was all I could find. I had to find wires run by others all of the time until I talked my boss into letting me run the low voltage. It saved a lot of time. Good luck.

    That particular G-B

is a hunk of junk IMO.  Left my good one behind, needed something on a job and bought one of those at H-D because it was priced right.  Silly me.  Burned through expensive coin cells and broke within a year.
  • Thanks, guys!

I was able to use the end switch wire for the thermostat since there is a pressure differential bypass at the boiler, but the Fluke is on order. It seems a necessary item for my hydronics toolbox.
