possible gas conversion and selling equipment

Hello,

I need help calculating the payback costs if it makes sense to convert to natural gas.

My current equipment is about 5 years old; 3 stage 85% efficiency rating, Riello burner, well insulated indirect and outdoor reset. Over the past 5 years my average annual oil consumption average has been 330 gallons per year. This coming winter I expect to use less fuel after I insulate some key areas of my home.

I know there is more energy from oil compared to an equivalent amount of gas and since I use relative small amounts of fuel, converting to gas may not make financial sense

Depending on the payback, perhaps just a gas burner makes sense with my current boiler.

any suggestions on who might be interested in purchasing a 4 year old burner and possibly boiler, well maintained annually? I do not want to invest too much time and effort and trying to sell either. THANKS!

It will take time but it will pay back

I replaced a 16 year old oil fired Burnham v75 steam boiler because the oil tank was beginning to weep, my fuel use was about 370 gallons per year. I had a smith 8-3 installed with a Carlin EZgas gas gun installed last October. I used 432 therms of gas for this last seasons heating. Gas in my area is about $1.45 per therm so my savings for the year was about 50% compared to what I would have paid for oil.

In my case it will take 11-12 years for the fuel savings to pay for the new boiler. You use less oil than I did so IF you can just put a gas gun into your current system payback would be less. If you have to replace everything, your payback will be longer.

I'll warn you up front that the Carlin EZgas is noisier than the oil gun in my smith 8-3 boiler (low frequency rumbling). What do you have installed now and can you post some pictures?

I have a Riello burner. I was told Riello's are one of the best and most reliable.

    conversion formula

Here is a way to figure out how much you will save on heating your home with gas:

gallons of oil consumed X 1.4 X price per therm of natural gas

price of oil consumed - result of above

The btu rating of oil is rounded to 140,000 for this formula. A therm of gas is 100,000 btus

    The Biasi B10 series boilers

are available from QHT with either Carlin or Riello gas burners. Either unit will run well in your boiler- there's no need to replace the boiler to switch fuels.

    Gas burner

I would put in either burner. If one is more abundant in your area I would lean that way. Service will be easier to find. The Riello will run a little more money than the carlin.
