    What a tragic story...

Makes one think about what it is that we work with on a daily basis... Gas, flame, CO, steam, hot water, ALL can be deadly if improperly handled...

I'm not certain I could go on living life if I had a situation similar to what this guy has experienced. I think I'd curl up and die...

Travel safe out there, and always THINK before doing...

It's not so much a case of "You got what you paid for", as it is a matter of "You DIDN'T get what you DIDN'T pay for, and you're NOT going to get what you thought you were in the way of comfort". Borrowed from Heatboy.

We keep the public safe from

explosive gases ( intended and not intended) we keep fire water and gas in check. We are obligated to do the right thing EVERY TIME we tighten a fitting or install a pipe or we risk our life and worse someone Else's life. If you do not have time to do it right then stay home and collect the dole so the professional who will do it right has a chance to go to the job. My prayers go out to the family that lost their daughter and my pity goes out to the gasfitter who lacked the sense God gave a beetle.
Cost is what you spend , value is what you get.

    preventative medicine

When I am finished with either inspecting an installation or working on one, I always run my hands around every pipe joint to count the screws and feel for how intact the pipe and joints are. I grasp the pipe and giggle it to ensure it is properly connected and supported. I do a lot of inspecting work and have screwed loose pipes on hundreds of installations at no charge simply because it was the right thing to do. It is sad how rampant it is that supposedly 'professionals' are willing to pack their tools and walk off a job leaving the occupants with disconnected pipes, unsecured pipes or never looked into the chimney AS REQUIRED BY CODE to see if it was blocked, collapsed or otherwise unsuitable. Everyone focuses on the things that won't kill you and neglect the one thing that will--improper venting.
