Frank is that acopper return I see !

Being the Steamheadthat you are, do you see no problem with copper returns ?

I have teased Ron about this, but, if you are onboard also, I may have to rethink this issuie ?

Also I noticed you have a full size equaliser, and not reduced as is the norm. Any comment ?

Scott

UTICA PEG 187 near boiler piping

What is the correct near boiler piping on a Utica PEG 187 steam boiler. The boiler is rated at 472 sq ft. steam.

My neighbor's boiler is connected using a single 2" taping. Using Dan's book, I did some steam velocity calculations and it seems to me that the steam velocity with just a 2" riser and header is much too high at 34 ft/second. I am thinking that a lot of water is being pushed into the mains and that this is caused hammering and water spurting out of some vents.

Anyway, I don't have a PEG 187 manual handy and I would like to know the correct near boiler piping.

    That's the same

as the Columbia CEG-187. Here's the diagram. It does call for two risers to the header.

The second pic is one we installed. We used a front-to-back header instead of a side-to-side one, but it does the job as well.

    God bless ya Steamhead

This is the second boiler I looked at on my block where at least part of the homeowner's problem is that there is one riser instead of the recommended two. One is a Utica PEG 187 and the other is a Peerless 61-06.
