I have a 2 pipe steam radiator system. It is building up too much condensate and banging in the lines. does the thermostatic steam trap at the bottom of the radiators have anything to do with this problem?

Very possible the trap has failed open, allowing steam into the condensate line. Is the banging actually in the line or in the radiator? If in the radiator, check and make sure the radiator has a slight pitch towards the trap. Is it just one pipe/radiator or multiple ones? When was the last time the traps were checked?

the banging is in the line. When the heat is on the radiator remains cold. the other radiators are getting hot.

I would say the trap has failed closed. There are kits available for traps. If you can get any names and numbers off of the trap and post a picture of it on here, someone can help you with a kit Number, especially @Sailah

Traps usually fail open but it depends on what trap you have. Post up some pics of the trap.

A good heating technician with a steam-specific skill set will be able to test your traps. They are designed to last 5 years, and though many last much longer, should be tested periodically.
