I'm on long island today meeting one of my distributors and it is readily apparent there is a huge need for steam system expertise specifically doing survey work in conjuction with the utility companies.

Please contact me and I'll be happy to start a dialogue about what's involved.

At the moment the most pressing need is Long Island but I'm happy to discuss the idea all over NY.

Thanks

Hi thanks for the interest. I posted my cell phone because I was driving a long way home and it was fresh on my mind.

I'm back in the office today so anyone who would like to discuss is welcome to call me there. 781 963 8000 x214

    To answer a couple questions.

This is (initially) doing steam trap surveys so that large steam users can qualify for rebates or incentives from national grid. So we're talking gas users in grid territory. Which there are a lot.

Currently there really isn't anyone doing this so they have to import surveyors from New England. Which is fine because the surveyors have a lot of experience however it's not exceptionally complicated work and pays well.

I met yesterday with the National Grid trade rep who is trying to push the incentives and she was the one who asked if I knew anyone who would want to get in this field hence this post.

In addition to the survey work, and here's where I think you guys would excel, they are looking for a host of other potential therm savers in the boiler room. Which is all good work too. Most surveyors I know aren't experienced with boiler room equipment so another firm has to come in and do that too. I think what I'm saying is that it's far easier for an experienced steam guy to add surveying steam traps to his quiver than the other way around.

Just so we're clear these are large buildings with large boilers and 100-1000+ traps. I'm sure requisite licences and insurance etc are required. In order to get training on steam trap testing I'm happy to have an impromptu training session here where we can use the various tools of the trade to test known good and bad traps. A FLIR infrared camera (e4) and ultrasonic tester (accutrak vpe 1000) are the standard tools of the trade.

I'm happy to connect you with National Grid and have Laura explain it in more detail I'll also post their list of their efficiency measurements when I get in the office.

    Thanks

So here is what Grid is looking for. These are custom measures for businesses and a require a analysis before they are able to be funded. Most large facilities would qualify under this

And then these are prescriptive rebates, meaning you do the measures and your customer submits the invoices and gets the rebate. I think steam traps are a $75 rebate and they count a repair as a trap.

They are also doing free boiler tune-ups

Steam trap surveys can be done by the local Spirax/Sarco rep or an Armstrong rep. I prefer Armstrong as they will not try to steal the customer.
