Check this out, old gravity expansion tank overflow piped right into the bathrooms vent stack...clearly I got there after they removed the expansion tank :( even more sad that I asked the demo team to save it for me...they did not.

The piping from mine is still in the attic, and goes into the stack.

It's all very cool, it's the original (snowman) boiler too, but forced circulation now. We'll see if we can replace that next ;)

Thankfully...I didn't have to deal with the snowman, and pay to have asbestos removed.

That's how it's set up at my folks house too, except that there's also a tee at the highest point that goes through the roof...I imagine to serve as a vent or a way to break the vacuum in the pipe between the tank and the stack.

She still has her original square riveted tank too, complete with sight glass and brass valves. No longer connected to the system, of course.

According to one of my Dead Men's Books, that snowman is probably 40% efficient or so on oil, and probably the same on gas.
