Burnham MPO IQ147 or Weil Mclain WGO3

I had a Burnham V7 Boiler installed in 1999 it failed after four years Burnham replaced the block with a V8 block now the V8 block cracked in exactly the same place that the last block cracked, the middle section near the clean out access about half way high on the section.

My home is 2400 sq ft.  Hydro air system two heating zones and a third zone for DHW.  I use about 850 gal of oil a year.

I am trying to decide between the above two units.  I am very hesitant to put another Burnham product in but the castings on the mpo is very different than the V7 and V8.  Also with the warrantee  rebate from Burnham the mpo would be substantially less than the wgo.

I had a installer here today that suggested I should loop a small amount of the outflow water directly back to the inflow he thinks the water returning may be too cold and that is what has caused the problem.

Your thoughts and suggestions will be appreciated

Thank you

    Bee stings:

How many times should someone stand under the tree that the bees live in and be stung.

I've never had a Weil McLain boiler ever crack that was properly installed or improperly installed. I've seen more than a few "V" s leak in that exact same place. "V's aren't the only Burnham boilers I have seen with cracks.

    I've installed a lot of WGO/WTGO 3's, 4's, and a few 5's. Along with a few 8's. Nary a crack.

IMO, it's the best "Pinner" out there. If they are left as "Warm Start", they are easy to clean.

Whatever your installer is happy with, that's what you should go with. If the new one cracks like the old ones, you'll be calling him first.

    thank you

    Icesailor,

Thank you for your reply.  I try to avoid bee stings whenever  possible, that is why I am here.  I am trying to educate myself before I make this decision.

    Thanks again

    Weil Mclain

We install a lot of the Ultra series with no problems. They run great and the serviceability is awesome.

The MPO and the W-M Ultra Oil

are both 3-pass boilers, which are much easier to service than pin-type ones, even if a pinner is warm-start. If those two makers were the only ones available, I'd use an MPO or Ultra Oil.

Other good 3-pass boilers are the Biasi and its relatives (Solaia, Tri-Fire etc.) and the Slant/Fin Eutectic.

The most important factor is a proper installation.

    Buderus or WM

    I like WM and Buderus,

If it were me, I would install a G115 Buderus or the WM, pipe it primary secondary with an outdoor reset and delta tee circulators at least on the hydro airs.... I love how this system works, I have been doing a ton of boilers this way.... Especially hydro airs, they tend to have cold returns, but they respond to delta t circs very well, the system ends up very uniform... You only need bumble bee circs, an odr capable control like the 3250+ with its os100 odr kit, and the pri/sec near boiler piping with a system circ, use a taco exp zone control and it will control your zones, priority dhw, and system circ...

I will second steamhead in saying the installer is key....

We have lots of W-M Golds out here on the Cape-I've yet to encounter a leaker, whether warm-start or cold-start. I haven't yet worked on an Ultra, but if I had to do it over again at my house (I have a Gold, which I'm very happy with-cold start, stays nice and clean) I'd probably go with the Ultra or another 3-pass cast iron.
