Does an indirect HW heater make sense with steam boiler?

I have a gas fired atmospheric HW heater that needs replacement. I know that indirect tanks are the most efficient during the heating season. But during the summer, my sense is that the large mass of boiler water in the WM SGO3 boiler will waste fuel and heat my house. My inclination is to stay with the 10-year gas HW heater.

Any thoughts?

    Right track

    Steve,

I agree with your thinking on steam and indirect.

    Have you considered an instantaneous?

    true...

I would do a Noritz or a Rinnai. Make sue your gas pipe is sized right.

In MA with our cold water temps

I have good results with and indirect. Boiler does not need to get up to steam temps to heat water heater. No need for larger gas lines, and meter. It also keeps the boiler exercising all summer. Also the indirect has very low jacket loss and a very high capacity.
